I did change the “Tool Heads (TH)” on the Workhorse to the correct one.

These printers don’t sense their toolhead, you select it in CuraLE in the “add printer” dialog, and on the toolhead menu on the printer.

I called support and they said try updating Lulzbot Cura. I updated Cura to the latest stable version. Added new machine. Did firmware update. Connected to machine. It didn’t report a different toolhead. Repeated M306T then M500. I still have 1.75mm values in where it’s supposed to be 2.85?

Any other ideas?

It’s never going to say wrong toolhead.

The machine nor windows has any way of knowing what toolhead is installed.

It doesn’t detect a toolhead. There’s no toolhead detector.

At best it might be able to detect that there’s different firmware on the machine than you’re trying to load.

You may have been asked and answered this already, but can you provide a picture of the actual toolhead installed?

So, just to be clear, when you add the machine in Cura LulzBot Edition 4.13.10, it should be selected as Taz Workhorse(+) with Meteor 2.85

 ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex020/uploads/lulzbot/original/2X/d/d6a247a2723055207f907587de485a24c7c9c4e7.png)

After doing that, updating firmware should be putting firmware 2.1.3.0.29

 ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex020/uploads/lulzbot/original/2X/b/b67b941db883b5018a3c3a16daf8828d5b69b8f8.png)

 ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex020/uploads/lulzbot/original/2X/7/7dc5dc2f9b9f9596fa4a76d3b418d213c57e7abd.png)

I just checked the latest Marlin code for the firmware, and it indeed does NOT have different values for the 2.85 vs 1.75 Galaxy-series toolheads:

 ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex020/uploads/lulzbot/original/2X/c/c21340ab36ccd20f8be05ac2e9b3abc0b69e206e.png)

So it will be necessary to put in the command to use the 2.85mm filament heat capacity. It might get changed when you select the toolhead from the toolhead menu, but I can’t check that right now.

</div>

I named the toolhead “NEW” because I added a new toolhead in settings. My profiles from the old toolhead were kept when I uninstalled the old Cura.
I did all the steps to update that you mentioned.

What command do I need to run to use 2.85mm filament?
I tried all the diffrent toolheads in the menu and ran M503. All had the same result for 1.75mm heat capacity.
Would you consider this a bug that needs reported?

The command to set your heat capacity would be
`M306 H0.0149`
Then re-run autotune
`M306 T`

I created a bug report, as the default filament heat capacity for all of the Meteor toolheads is for 1.75mm filament. Since no machine comes with the MET175 as standard, this should not be the default.

The toolhead menu also does not change the filament heat capacity as it would be expected.

You may want to clear out your cura configuration files in C:\Users\*username\*\AppData\Roaming. Just wipe out the Cura folders in there. It should be impossible to see any 1.75mm filament. It’s actually filtered so only filament with a set diameter of 2.85mm will show up.

If you make filament and input 1.75mm into the diameter, you get a warning, and then it will disappear from view:

Hopefully that takes care of the other heater failed issues, but it still seems like that small of a change wouldn’t be enough to cause a thermal error.

It prints better and temperature readings appear more accurate. Unfortunately there still seems to be a heating problem.

I did not adjust the temperature at all! When speeding up after the first layer there is a large temperature drop of about 10c. Mid print: Huge temperature spike, no change in speed!

That looks like the thermistor is giving a bad reading. Loose connection, partially broken wire, or the thermistor itself may be moving inside the cartridge.

It has been several weeks since my last post. The Taz WH seems to be holding steady.
I haven’t had any thermal runaways (loss of heat). And I have printed about a total of 12 hours after the fix (MPC H0.0149).
I still notice some difficulties with heating up, but only while cruising at ~210c and then climbing. (210c initial layer temperature). It sometimes takes 2 minutes to steadily cruise at 217c. Which is my default for PRO PLA.
I don’t notice as much of a problem printing at higher temperatures but that might be because I don’t print that often with other materials unlike PRO PLA.

I guess time will tell when this machine will reveal its problem. Anyway, thanks guys for the help and support! Happy printing! 😃

My next project a 1.8m wingspan 3D printed FPV aircraft!

For starters your going to want something lightweight for something like a RC plane or drone remember the heavier it is the more energy to do the same I have seen light weight PLA being used second to the best of my knowledge color fab invented lightweight PLA their from the Netherlands third even though their are ways to adjust the density of LW PLA you will need to reach out

I need help again. The toolhead struggled to keep heat at the desired temperature right after initial layer; picking up speed. Temps were set to 250c and they didn’t go above 235c. The temperature curve seemed to drop very gradually until it reached 235c and then the printer cancelled the print.

I did some research and found someone else who had the same problem.
I checked my toolhead and I find the thermistor on the Meteor 285 is loose! It’s so loose that it can be rotated 360! This means it wasn’t in good contact with the heat block and when extruding more filament it kept getting colder due to poor contact. I can’t seem to tighten it back into place. The heat block is so different to the stock original HE 0.5mm toolheads.

Any ideas on how to get the thermistor to have good contact with the heat block?

I also found out the heater is very loose too!

I just found that there is a need for thermal paste because there is no screw pushing the thermistor and heater to the wall of the heat block.

This is what Slice Engineering says.

“Reliable Potting Solution

Boron Nitride Paste is the ideal potting agent when installing heaters and temperature sensors. Mosquito® and Copperhead® hot blocks use retaining screws to hold the heater and sensor in place instead of clamps (which can put unnecessary pressure on the cartridges and reduce their lifespan), requiring Boron Nitride Paste as a potting agent to hold the cartridges firmly in place.”

Just bought some. In a hurry to get a project done. Hopefully it was a good idea.
