# Replacing the hobbed bolt

Anyone know how to remove the thing? I figured it would just be a matter of removing the bolt on the end of it but it’s attached to the large gear and I see no way of getting it out.

Check step 12 of OHAI for assembling the toolhead. After you remove the nut at the end, you can just slide it out of the bearings and washers. You should be able to slide it out of the large green gear easily. If it’s a little stuck just gently hit the opposite end of a bolt with something and it should pop out of the gear.

One big question is why do you want to remove it? Replacing it even with an identical hobbed bolt will change your E-steps, and the hobbed bolts will not wear down within the lifetime of your printer in most cases, so there us rarely reason to replace it.

Yes. The hobbed bolts on my 4 Mini 1 printers have worn down or worn out. On the oldest one (10 years ±) I can pull the filament out the top and the bolt does not turn. First clue was Feed Skips and bead gaps in the print. Finally, missing 1/2 of layer for a few layers. Parts of layer at higher print speed (60mm/s) Replaced bolt, all better.
