Good evening everyone!

I’ve managed to print several pieces/rings with great success, however there’s a thing in particular that’s been bugging me.

 ![IMG_1013.png](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex020/uploads/lulzbot/original/1X/7ac7b106f4863de3a0922b9f86c3a3dd12847112.png)

As you can see on the first photo, the first layers come up a little screwed up but the upper layers print just fine. On the second photo, there’s plastic buildup or the extruder pushes away plastic, don’t really know what’s going on there.

Is there something i’m missing?!

BTW, I’m printing ABS plastic, 220°C Extruder, 90°C Heated bed, Slic3r 1.00 RC3 and the latest pronterface.

Thanks in advance 😃!

Do you have the correct filament setting in Silc3r?

Do you have the skirt setting on and/or the brim to get the filament going?

Also I would use Repetier and slice via Slic3r separately.

I’m actually using the profiles provided by Lulzbot!

The skirt is set by default, I never turn it off.

I’m also using proterface and Slic3r separately. I’ll try using Repetier to control the printer.

Did you buy your filament from Lulzbot?

I bought my first set of filament from [MakerGeeks.com](http://MakerGeeks.com). I have had several clogs. Then I bought some of the famous Lulzbot Green from Luzbot. There is noticeable difference in print quality and the feel of the filament. The cheaper stuff feels much rougher and less refined.

So you predefined setting maybe for one size filament but the actual filament you are using is different.

Oh, forgot to mention it! I’ve only bought ABS & PLA plastics from lulzbot.

Try changing your first layer height by adjusting the Z axis endstop so that it’s either a bit closer or a bit farther away to see how that changes things.

Once upon a time I was having the same issue, only way, way worse. The TAZ I was using was built using z-nut mounts printed by a non-reprap printer (that shall remain unnamed) that, even at the densest infill setting, did not fill in the space between the perimeters on the curvy bits. The result was very weak z-nut mounts that would allow a large range of motion in z without any turning of the z-motors and z screws. I replaced the z-nut mounts with stronger ones, and the problem went away almost entirely.

Afaict this mode of failure is caused by hysteresis – the z-axis is homed, then prints the first layer and indexes up for the second layer, but the motion is taken up in the springs and the z-axis assembly does not move at all. The result is that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and, depending how bad the problem is, 4th, 5th, 6th, etc layers are printed _all in the same plane_.

Different printers have different degrees of hysteresis depending on how much friction there is between the z-bushings and the z-rods (which depends on how well aligned the two bushings in each double bearing holder, and how perpendicular the x-rods are to the z-rods, among other things).

You can counter the hysteresis by measuring how much there actually is, and then putting a move-up-in-z command (which shouldn’t be enough to _actually_ move the axis, just enough to preload the springs) into your start gcode in slic3r. The idea is that this will pre-load the z-nut mount springs such that when they index up for the second layer the axis actually moves, rather than just flexing the z-nut mount springs. Here is an example of some start g-code for a printer with 100 microns (.1mm) of hysteresis:

```nohighlight
G28 ; home all axis
G91 ; set relative motion
G1 Z0.1 ; counter hysteresis
G90 ; set absolute motion
```
