Mini 1 prints first few layers then print comes off the bed

Hi All

My Mini 1 has been idol for about 10 years now as I was having issues with the print sticking to the bed.

Recently I decided to try using it again and I replaced the PEI sheet thinking that was the problem. I printed rocktopus and sort of managed. After a few layers a tentacle lifted off the bed and then another and then another until all lifted, but the print completed.

I tried printing a part I needed just a basic pipe connector but it came off the bed after a few layers (4mm) and then I thought maybe it wasn’t warm enough so I put a big box over the whole printer but still got the same result.

I then tried adjusting the Y offset for the first layer but got the same result.

I am using ABS 3mm Village Plastics which is also 10 years old so I thought maybe the plastic has lost it’s original properties and I was looking to buy a new roll but they don’t seem to have 3mm.

Any help ? What other reason could it be?

Thanks

I have a Mini 1 and, amazingly, still print with it. Although I went through a similar period of a few years where I did not use it.

In 2020, I replaced the stock printbed with Matterhacker’s LulzBot Mini Glass/PEI Print Surface and Modular Print Bed Heater and saw some improvement on adhesion. But consistently using blue painters tape with PVA Glue Stick on top also helps a lot.

I have a bunch of material, some of it is probably 10 years old, but I recommend you not use old filament; you want to eliminate that as the problem. Get some decent PLA, which is the easiest material to print with (ABS has issues with “curling”).

Make sure you’re using the latest version of Cura that has the Mini 1 profile, and flash the firmware.

Next, go through these procedures:

Now try printing rock2pus. Also try some models that allow you test the first layer.

Good luck hope that helps.
