so, i finally had some time to play with calibrating this some more tonight and im just completely lost at this point as to what could be going on here.
layer height .2
2 shells
ABS filament from lulzbot printed @ 240
bed @ 110
pictures first then ill explain the best i can what im seeing.
measuring the cube it comes out to 19.94mm x 19.74mm and it should be 20x20. i know it should be that because after having some issues with pulling calibration cubes offline i just made one in fusion360 real quick to use to make sure i knew what i had. you can see in the pic where the cube is still on the bed, the rear two corners look like they are peeling up, overextruded, etc. which doesnt correlate with the fact that when measuring the finished product it comes out smaller then it should be, because that most definitely is underextrusion.
at this point im stumped. hopefully someone can shed some light as to what im doing wrong because im just lost here at this point.
Check the x carriage for a loose bearing or excess play. Your print nozzle is all over there. That’s not just slicer settings. Something is off mechanically. Your layers and gap between infil and walls are off too. Can you post pictures of the internal mechanics? Maybe well be able to see something. If you are under warranty I would call support.
Yeah, something looks wrong mechanically. Its happening on both X & Y… check that the top screw holding the toolhead to the x-carriage is tight. Also check that the hotend is tight on the extruder, should be two M4 screws on the bottom of the mount (one may be blocked by the extruder fan).
Call tech support… send the pictures. They are really good at walking folks through things…
lulzbot tech support wanted a few test prints done in CURA, which i was more then happy to do if it will help diagnose whatever issues im having here. so just as an update to this, these are the prints im getting from CURA versus all ive posted before which was from Simplify3D
Yeah, there almost have to be multiple things wrong to get a print that looks like that. On stock firmware with a stock ABS profile even with really horrible filliament you shouldn’t get something that bad. It’s like one or more axis rods are loose, or the extruder carriage itself is able to move where it shouldn’t be. If I had pictures of the entire inside mechanism we might be able to see something, but as it is, i"m kind of stumped. Theres a wave in the plane of the Z axis, it looks like it’s both underextruding and overextruding in different areas, the temperature looks off because the layers aren’t binding even where it is in contact, and the X and Y layer alligntment isn’t alligned. It’s almost like the step values for everything in the firmware are wrong by 1%, and there is a broken frame piece or something wierd.
i see nothing broken. nothing seems loose. i was sent a .gcode file to print out for another test but i cant even get the model to move on the bed in CURA. its stuck in the corner and its not allowing me to move it. so im going to just take a shot and try some brand new PLA that i have here and see if that is at all better, it was suggested to me that perhaps the ABS roll i have is contaminated.
When you are doing your Cura test prints, what layer height are you using? My Rocktopus looks like it has quite a bit tighter layering.
Try the attached ini file on your mini with PLA and print your rectangular block again. Click Expert>Switch to Full Settings. File>open profile (point to the attached file and open it). Load your model, press print. PLA_high-quality_Mini_single-extruder-v2_0.5noz_cura - Modified.ini (12.9 KB)
Holy crap, its distorting things that much? No wonder everything looks horribly off. Throw that camera away and get one that can take decent pictures and well be able to help much more
I was using the profile from lulzbots website that was just their standard print file. I will give this a go tomorrow hopefully.
Same with the cube I printed. That was at a .20 layer height. Which I’m pretty sure is what the profile was for the rocktopus was as well.
The lense for that shot I was just too close. That’s why it ended up like that, olloclip macro. Trust me…the other pics I’ve posted look just as bad in person if not worse, so it’s not the lense that’s hurting me more then it’s helping, lol.
That was printed with Simplify3D, which is what I would prefer to use now that it seems I’ve got the issue figured out from earlier, I can save the .fff file if that helps? Or the Factory File?
Your rectangular block looks a lot like a rocktopus, but I will say he looks a lot better!
He still looks quite a bit underextruded though. Have you set your E-steps yet? I’m doing that now on my Mini, and I found it needed a slight adjustment, was 833, now 820.7.
my esteps started at 833 as well from Lulzbot, im sitting at 820 now by just the free air calibration. i was chasing around the issue with the calibration prints coming out awful with that ABS spool i have, which is apparently contaminated (going to try and dry it out this weekend), so i havent gotten to do any calibration prints with this PLA as of yet. im going to do a few other free air extrusion measurements tomorrow then try a single walled cube and see where im at then with this PLA now.
