PEI bed surface

Has anyone tried printing Nylon or Poly-Carbonate on this surface yet?

I have not yet. I need to bring in a hot end that can print the higher temperature stuff at some point in here once I get a few of the other projects finished.

It’s still working extremely well for ABS though for sure. I have another sheet on the way for the AO-10x too.

How easy is this stuff to cut? I definitely want to try this. I’m sick of the green PET sheets with the ABS slurry. It’s just not consistent. Sometimes I get the slurry a little to concentrated and other times it’s too diluted and some prints stick too well while others peel back and warp and crack. The PET is also too fragile and seems to get easily damaged when removing those hard sticking prints. I need consistency with this part of my printing process.

How easy is this stuff to cut?

On my first sheet, I used an Acrylic scoring knife and it took forever.

On my second sheet, I used my bandsaw.

For anyone interested, for various reasons, I had to remove the first sheet I applied. I was surprised that the PEI pulled off the 3M 486MP adhesive with very little effort. Getting the adhesive off the glass, however, is more of a challenge. For that, WD-40 and a Razor Blade scraper work well. I bought some liquid WD-40 and used that instead of making a mess with the spray cans.

Also, if you squish your 1st layer down too much, it will be very difficult to get it off the PEI.

I cut my sheet with a set of extra large sheet metal sheers, and those worked fine. I think the ones we are using here could be cut with some stout scissors or a saw easily enough. The edges of the cut can be a little brittle, but it was manageable.

I haven’t used any abs slurry since I started using these, and i’m getting the best prints I have ever seen. I’m told the sheets should also work great with PLA.

Yup, I made a few PLA prints with the bed at 60C and no other bed treatments, works a treat

Has anyone printed on this without using any adhesive? I was thinking about using binder clips around the edge and then just removing the binder clips and the entire sheet with the finished print still on. It seems like I should be able to just peel the PEI sheet off the print but since my sheets haven’t been delivered I’m not really sure how flexible and fragile the PEI sheets are.

PEI is a little brittle. but it will flex somewhat. Its probably less flexible than an equivalent sheet of plexiglass or lexan for comparison. I think you might be able to go with just a PEI sheet if you were to get a much thicker one and rout the edge to a nice round bevel, but I haven’t tried it.

Some people are clipping the 1/16 inch sheets to their beds.

I bought a couple thicker sheets but haven’t tried them yet. The .040 seems to work well but it needs to be stuck to the glass with adhesive.

Kenny

Have you tried it without adhesive? If its more rigid then plexiglass then it seems like it might print without being tapped down.

The .040 is too thin and flexible, I think, to just clip down.

I’m going to experiment with a 1/16 inch PEI sheet by clipping it to the glass and see how flat it is.

I have 4 borosilicate glass beds and all of them bow in the center when anchored down to the 4 corners so it is impossible to perfectly level the bed, so I need for my PEI sheets to be as flat as possible. I don’t think there is any way to just lay the .040 sheets on the glass and keep them flat with clips on the edges.

I suppose if you can get the 1/16 inch PEI sheets to lay flat, they would be flatter than the .040 with the 3M adhesive between it and the glass.

I have a 1/8x12x12 sheet coming from amazon I amd going to play with while waiting on my geckotec plate to arrive from the kickstarter campaign. Going to try just clipping it to the glass.

Can somebody suggest a type of adhesive for applying the sheet?

This seems to have worked just fine for me:

Wait, I saw that above, but I thought that was the PEI sheet itself…Is there a link for the PEI sheet?

If you want to buy it from Amazon, 12 inch square by 30 mils: Amazon.com: PEI (Polyetherimide) Sheet, Opaque Natural, Standard Tolerance, ASTM D5205 PEI0113, 0.03" Thickness, 12" Width, 12" Length : Industrial & Scientific

12 inch square by 60 mils: Amazon.com: PEI (Polyetherimide) Sheet, Amber, Standard Tolerance, ASTM D5205 PEI0113, 0.06" Thickness, 12" Width, 12" Length : Industrial & Scientific

They also have 90 mils, 1/8", 3/16", and 1/4" thickness available.

40 mil PEI sheet works well, and can be cut easily with a large shears. You can order from ZORO Tools for a 12" x 24" and sometimes can find a discount coupons

OMG why is this not the stock bed material???

Got a 1/8" x 12" x 12" sheet from amazon. Cleaned my glass plate for the very last time. layed it on top the glass and clamped it with the corner clamps. reset the z home, leveled the bed and hit print.

Perfect adhesion first attempt. This stuff is amazing. I had given up printing ABS till I found a better solution and this is it.

Order one today, you will not be sorry.

Print ABS 230c hotend, 110c bed May be a while before I print PLA again but expect to get same results as others are reporting.

I know, right? I wish I knew about this a few months ago heh. Best, most cost effective easiest printer upgrade I have ever done. And I’ve done a bunch of them

Update.

the sheet bowed a bit in the center after being at temp for a bit. ordered some 3/4" tape at same time just in case. going to try a bit of tape on edges and center and see how that runs.
