Hello, I have a couple of TAZ Workhorses where I work and have been given the task of fixing them and troubleshooting them. A Few of them work fine, though I am having an issue with one of them I cannot seem to fix.
The prints are coming out askew and in some cases, not fully printed at all. I’ve attached some photos of a successful print from another workhorse, and the one I am having trouble with. I have tried bed leveling, adjusting the z-offset, different slicers, I’ve updated the firmware. I am still unsure of what is wrong.
You’re seeing immense backlash on the Y axis (assuming they’re oriented with Y axis up/down in the image). Whenever the Y axis motor starts rotating in the opposite direction, it’s not actually causing movement of the Y axis until it rotates enough to “catch”.
This is almost certainly due to one of two things:
A loose grub screw on the gear mounted to the Y axis motor, or a failing belt mount on the Y Axis.
I’ve seen loose grub screws on several of the more modern Lulzbot machines, but it’s an easy fix. Just remove both grub screws (they are 90 degrees apart), put a little bit of blue threadlocker on them, and re-insert, ensuring that one of them is aligned with the flat side of the motor axle.
