Upgrading a LulzBot TAZ 5 to TAZ 6

Possibly later this week, probably next week.
We want to nail down the correct options before we price it out.

Any hope for a print your own parts kit?

Unlikely, there’s not enough of the chassis to attempt to break them up into multiple kit options in the right proportion to meet demand. The printed parts wouldn’t add much to the price tag anyway.
These are “used/blemished” parts kits, so we’ll be pricing them pretty low. The point is to get them to those that need them and save them from the landfill, not to extract every last possible dollar

The thinking is to break down full chassis into required hard parts kits as needed, making things flexible to meet demand. If we broke down chassis in different kits, we’d end up with too many of kit A, and not enough of kit B.
The breakdown process should also leave “extra” parts that we’ll also list individually to meet that demand.

Any suggestions to better optimize distribution?

Any interest in Taz 6 openrails on the X axis? The Y axis will work as is. Z’s a complete retrofit anyways.

Yep, we’ll talk

Thanks.

I’m interested in a kit too depending on price

I installed the TAZ 6 Y-axis auto bed leveling upgrade on my TAZ 4 and I found out that without also doing the TAZ 6 X-axis upgrade the hotend cannot reach the wiper on the side of the bed (see 1st pic) and it cannot reach the bed leveling corner washers on the left side of the bed (see 2nd pic).

In both pics the X-axis is pushed all the way to the left so that the X-axis limit switch is compressed, yet the wiper cannot be reached. In the 2nd pic the left extruder of my dual extruder Chimera hotend can reach the washer, but the mid-line of the extruder which is where a single extruder would be positioned (unless the extruder mount is offset to the left), cannot reach the bed leveling washers.

For now I’m still using copper tape in the four corners as contacts for the auto bed leveling; however I am using the bed leveling washers to make the connections between the copper tape and the aluminum bed mounting plate instead of using soldered wires like I did here:

i-t-w do you have a timeline for when the X-axis upgrade kits will be available?

I’d be interested in an upgrade kit

This would definitely be of interest. Can’t wait to hear about pricing.

I would also be interested in an upgrade kit.

I’m interested in some parts for sure!!

Update:
After a bunch of feedback, I’m now thinking we should just post the parts individually and let folks pick and choose what they’re looking for. I’m now adding links to parts in the OP as they are ready to ship.

Benefits include buying as your budget allows and to customize to your taste. Downsides include us selling out and never getting more of “that one part you need”.

We also have 3-4 mostly complete Mangrove and Nutmeg chassis (yes, with partial wiring harnesses) That we’ll keep together and for sale for now.

Your thoughts?

Bonus pics of what we have after organizing and tearing down many chassis.

Very soon. Should we sell the X carriages as pictured below, maybe minus steppers and belts, or part them out completely?

We’re also trying to figure out if the longer horizontal 510mm chassis extrusions (vs 500mm on prior TAZs) are “required” for upgrades, or if they just buy a bit of extra room on production machines.

From a TAZ 4/5, you can re-use your RAMBO, lead screws, Z nuts, Y and Z smooth rods, Y axis motor end plate, steppers, half the chassis extrusions, hotbed, power supply, toolhead- adding the bed leveling sense wire, and (maybe) control box- you’d need to creatively re-purpose the second extruder plug for the additional wires the X/Y/Z max limit switches and auto leveling systems add.

We’re also trying to figure out if the longer horizontal 510mm chassis extrusions (vs 500mm on prior TAZs) are “required” for upgrades, or if they just buy a bit of extra room on production machines.

More parts are up! https://itworks3d.com/product-category/parts/taz-6-parts/

I think you should sell them as you show pictured minus the steppers and belts.

Yep, that’s how they were posted https://itworks3d.com/product/taz-6-x-z-carriage-assembly/

If you sell any of the stock taz 6 y axis feet from the corners, I would buy a couple to compare with my printed ones. I also am looking for a stock taz 6 y axis bed wire harness so I can see if it fits the rail mod. A damaged one would be fine for that as in not intending to use that type of leveling.

Im looking for a complete Y axis replacement as well as a couple of the old round connector plugs…
