TAZ dual extruder mod files

original design discusion from here: https://forum.lulzbot.com/t/dual-extruders-and-the-taz/91/1 I will try to use this thread specifically for the files and instructions.

I just put up the files on thingiverse.

and I will see if I can attach them here too. 3 total files, the mount, the adjustment block, and modified wades extruder housing (2 of these needed).

DOH…STL’s are not allowed for upload…trying zips.

UPDATE 6-25-2013: Added Supported motor moved extruder files for easier printing.
Supported motor moved extruder 1013.zip (355 KB)
TAZ dual extrude STPs 1013.zip (262 KB)
TAZ dual extrude STLs 1013.zip (74.2 KB)

Parasolid files (.X_T) are only viewable by very expensive proprietary (commercial) software. Supplying your files in STEP (.stp) which is an ISO standard would make them more accessible. They could be imported into open source software such as FreeCAD, Heekscad, and possibly BRL-CAD.

Even though Solid Edge STEP export is awful at least it’s something.

good point, I will use step files instead of parasolids.

DONE.

Thanks! All three STEP files checked fine in FreeCAD.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

thanks to lulzbot for providing the model files, so I could do this mod.

I also have a mod that gives 12mm of extra X axis travel, and some strengthened parts that may help with the x axis belt slipping off (The green parts in the picture above)

Thanks! Looks great.

You’re dual extruder is really impressive!

I’m trying to figure out which parts of the Gregs Wade extruder I need to print for both extruders. Can you post which parts you used? Did you use jonaskuehling_gregs-wade-v3_mirrored_repaired.stl?

I’m assuming the files are in http://devel.lulzbot.com/TAZ/printed_parts/main_fleet/ or http://download.lulzbot.com/TAZ/hardware/printed_parts/

Thanks!

you need the idler and washer.
http://devel.lulzbot.com/TAZ/printed_parts/main_fleet/jonaskuehling_gregs_wade_ao/extruder_idler-washer/
and of course the heringbone gears.
http://devel.lulzbot.com/TAZ/printed_parts/main_fleet/herringbone_large_gear/
http://devel.lulzbot.com/TAZ/printed_parts/west_fleet/herringbone_small_gear/

and I added these links to thingiverse.

Thanks! That’s perfect.

When I load your STLs in Slic3r, they are really small - what scale should they be printed at? The ones on this forum and Thingiverse are the same tiny size.

scale by 25.4 they were saved as metric…I think.

Scale should be 100% AFAIK. Don’t know why they import tiny for you in Slic3r, here’s how the large and small gear imported in Slic3r looks like for me.

Please note that I have an AO-100 so my build platform is smaller than the TAZ (mine is 200x190mm).

Here are the outside dimensions according to slicer when I scale them up 25.4 times:

TAZ_DUAL_EXTRUDE_adjustment_block_1013 - 116x99.6x27
JKGWT1013-v3_Motor_Moved_Extruder - 109.83x59x28
TAZ_DUAL_ExtruderMount_1013 - 115x118.82x102.06

Does that look about right? I’ll post comments on the Thingiverse object after I print them.

Here is the list of printed parts needed, as I understand it:

From Lulzbot
Latch - 2x (http://download.lulzbot.com/TAZ/hardware/printed_parts/extruder_latch/extruder_latch-2.0.stl)
Idler and Washer - 2x (http://download.lulzbot.com/TAZ/hardware/printed_parts/jonaskuehling_gregs_wade_ao/extruder_idler-washer/jonaskuehling_gregs-wade-ao-v3-washer_idler.stl)
Herringbone Large - 2x (http://download.lulzbot.com/TAZ/hardware/printed_parts/herringbone_large_gear/herringbone_large_gear-1.0.stl)
Herringbone Small - 2x (http://download.lulzbot.com/TAZ/hardware/printed_parts/herringbone_small_gear/herringbone_small_gear-1.0.stl)

From User 1013
Motor Moved Extruder - 2x (JKGWT1013-v3_Motor_Moved_Extruder.stl - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:106147)
Adjustment Block - 1x (TAZ_DUAL_EXTRUDE_adjustment_block_1013.stl - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:106147)
Extruder Mount - 1x (TAZ_DUAL_ExtruderMount_1013.stl - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:106147)

Next up is to get the exact list of parts/hardware needed.

Once the Motor Moved Extruder file is updated (it’s printing in mid-air in two places; see the pictures on thingiverse) I will have all the printed parts done. I’m getting together the list of hardware needed now. Looking forward to building it!

Just added a support version to thingiverse, and will updated the OP soon.

Thanks to lulzbot for helping with adding the support. I just copied and pasted the support from their file.

Thanks! I’ll print it out tonight and post some pictures.

Hi All,

First post, Just paid for my TAZ, looking forward to it arriving. FedEx decided to price the cartage via “airplane” to Oz and not quantum tele-portation via the Moon and a parallel dimension, (thank Rachael, you help me out heaps!). First transport quote had me thinking Mr Obama was going to hand deliver it using Air-Force One and a motorcade…

Perhaps a silly question, but would smaller Nema motors keep the weight down on these dual head mods, or is that already the smallest one that will get the job done?

Looking forward to tinkering with me TAZ.

Andrew

Ouch, yeah those quantum teleportation charges to paralell dimensions can be rough. that’s why I only ship things via quantum teleportation to perpendicular universes.

Regarding smaller Nema motors, that is definitly something that is at least being looked at. Check out this thread here for some information regarding efforts to make a smaller, lighter extruder https://forum.lulzbot.com/t/adjustable-heat-bed-glass-mount/38/1 Specifically they are going to look at a 20mm NEMA motor instead of the current one as a possibility. My own minor contribution to that extruder design piece, I also made a belt drive variant which should be slightly lighter in theory anyways. Assuming it works and doesn’t explode and all.

I think the general plan is once the flexystruder design is tested and tweaked to perfection, they will try it in a dual extruder array and see what happens.

I’d also like to see a “2 filliaments into one budaschnozzle” modification, but the timing and retract needed for that would be scary.

Ah should have ticked ‘perpendicular universe’ option, I’ll remember for next time!

Found this re the Nema 11, he is driving 1.75 filament though. The nema 11 spec looks like they weight half what the 17’s do.

i’m thinking this (dual extruder) will be an early mod for me, as the parts i need to make have a fair amount of overhang, so I’m thinking ahead a bit.
