So today I decided to finally take the jump and flash this new firmware from my stock shipped Mini 1.0.0
Well, downloaded Cura (21.02). Installed on clean PC (win 7 pro)
Connected to printer fine (with Cura, and pronterface, so everything working)
In Cura ran (tried bot) Install Default Firmware / Instll Custom Firmware
Says loading 1.1.0.10 and connects and starts the upload,
gets about half way then pops error message Fail verifying 0x0 … and fails
I’ve tried to restart it several times, each time I am able to reconnect with cura/pronterface and it reports
old firmware, etc. so it recovered, but so far nothing but trouble trying.
I haven’t done a lot of testing yet, only about 6 tries, but posting this as it might be interesting…
I noticed that first layer fan control doesn’t seem to work. I set the fan to 100% on layer 1, using Simplify3D. I verified that the GCode command was correct and was the only one in the file. Printed, and the fan never turned on. I’m 99% sure this worked on the older firmware. I usually use a ramp-up for the fan, so it starts off or low, then kicks up based on height, so I never really noticed it before. If I set the fan to enable on layer 2, it works fine. So if you are running a single fan setting, and getting melty parts, you might try changing to a ramp-up. Cura does this by default it seems, so it’s possible I only saw it because I was slicing that part with Simplify3D and got a little lazy setting the parameters.
In practice, it’s not a huge deal, but since Simplify3D tells you that if you want one speed setting to use layer 1, it could cause issues for those users.
Not a bad idea. Especially if each side had a minimum limit switch (that worked correctly). Unfortunately the current MiniRAMBO boards have both z motors in parallel off one stepper driver chip. Perhaps if a different or upgraded board in the future was used.
Did you ever fix the issue for it not reaching the back two washers? If not i believe mine did that when i first upgraded and i noticed they changed the back plastic fixture slightly and when i printed the new fixture my new firmware touched the back washers fine. So in my case i has needed a “hardware upgrade” as well as a software upgrade. But this was awhile ago so i don’t know how many other people had that issue.
I have been running Marlin 1.1.10 for a bit, and really like the new wiping/leveling/retry features. But the fan noise is super irritating. I mentioned this in an earlier post:
With my Dec-2015-era Mini, the controller fan is now either FULL OFF or FULL ON with this firmware. It is OFF until motors are activated, then FULL ON, and stays FULL ON during printing. It returns to OFF a few minutes after the last motor movement. The FULL ON speed is LOUD. My controller fan used to run at about 60%, which was plenty for cooling and a lot quieter.
I experimented with changing CONTROLLERFAN_SPEED in configuration_adv.h, which apparently now uses a range of 0-30410 rather than the standard 0-255 used in previous Marlin versions. While I was able to successfully lower the fan speed, the lower speeds expose a very annoying BUZZING NOISE, which seems to be coming from the PWM changes made to accommodate the 0-30410 range. This noise is as bad or worse as the vacuum-cleaner noise from 100% speed.
It is my understanding that this noise (associated with running the 80mm Kysan case fan) is a side-effect of new PWM logic introduced to support the new 40mm Pelonis print cooling fan, while keeping compatibility with the older Kysan 40mm print cooling fan as used in my Mini.
Can anyone suggest a solution? Obviously it could be solved in software, reverting the PWM logic, but I admit to not understanding exactly how the new PWM “range” (0-30410 vs 0-255) was implemented so not sure how to revert that. I suppose another route would be hooking up the 80mm fan to a separate controller, but that loses the ability to have the fan automatically drop back to idle when prints finish.
