Broken nozzle in Taz 5

I was given a Taz 5 by an incredible friend about a year or so ago and only now I ventured myself on turning it on and all that jazz.

The extruder seemed to be completely blocked and after researching a bit, it was suggested that I changed the nozzle.

Well, while I tried changing it (the printer was HOT, I did not do it cold), the nozzle thread actually broke inside the block.

I’m considering changing the whole hot end kit but this printer looks like it has been modified to print 1.75mm filament, so I wanted to ask the experts here first.

What do you suggest I do?

The printer functions fine other than filament to having really come out properly and the nozzle now being stuck there.

Thank you in advance!!

Honest answer:

It needs a fresh print surface ($45 for a PEI sheet from luzlbot), but I’d rather go with an aftermarket removeable magnetic surface for about the same price.

That particular toolhead was only reliable for ABS. The tiny blower fan can’t keep heatcreep away with PLA, and the part cooling can’t keep up with anything that needs more cooling than ABS, HIPS or maybe Nylon.

It’s still got a Hexagon hotend, and it might have been slapping a 1.75mm nozzle on it that led to the jam in the first place. I don’t imagine many 1.75mm hexagon hot ends were sold. So you’ve got a possible frankenstein hotend that has issues. You can build a discount hotend for it for under $100, or diagnose that hotend and replace the parts that need it.

Even if it’s just that work, you’re already halfway to something like a modern coreXY machine that has a warranty and modern reliability like a AD5X FLASHFORGE AD5X - $210.05 at aliexpress.com
