How does layer thickness affect the strength of a part?

If cosmetic needs are secondary or unimportant, and you want the maximum strength from a part, does the layer thickness play any part in deciding the finished part strength? This is not layer orientation, just thickness



It depends on the material, the infil percentage, the print temperature, the infil pattern and design of the part, but for example a 100% infil abs rectangle would infact be stronger with thicker layers than lots of thinner layers in most cases. A pla part would potentially have no effect or potentially the opposite as additional alternating strands with good adhesion would increase strength, where with abs and not as great adhesion between layers that could be a weakness. Printing abs at very high temperatures does increase the bond between layers, and it is possible to heat or chemical treat for strength after.
