RC Airplane Project

Robajohn
Are you planning on taking a photo or 2 of the fully skinned aircraft?
I check in here from time to time
to see how the project is progressing.
Thanks

Well, yes. However I have not been in too big a hurry to post them because frankly, it is the worst covering job I have ever done. I think the very first time I covered a plane it came out better than this.

I blame the engineer though, he simply did not give enough flat areas to stick the covering down well AND there is not enough structure to support the covering and keep it from “scalloping”. It needed many more stringers just to hold the covering in the proper shape. That would have added weight though.

So I am abandoning the concept of using covering for now. On my next try I have printed the skin. That is another thread though!

Here you go though!

I really liked the way the cowling turned out!

I hate the windshield/battery hatch! As previously noted the windshield led me to change drafting packages.

Windshield is velcro’d on and gives you access to quick change the batteries and access wiring while the wing is on.

It is not finished. I did not complete the wingtips or the horizontal to vertical stab fairings but since I am changing methodologies and CAD software this one is a dead end. It is ugly but it will fly!

Tomorrow the winds *might be suitable to crash it,er, uh, I mean test fly it! The thing is HUGE- I will need two trash bags if this one craters!

In the meantime all I can offer is taxi’ing around the front yard with one hand!

Thanks for posting photos and video of your skinned aircraft.
It actually looks pretty good in your photos and video.
A design project such as this takes lots of endurance to carry out to the end.
Don’t be to hard on yourself.
You’ve already figured out your next build strategy.

I think it turned out quite nicely. Better than I would have done for sure. And you have some changes in mind to make the next build better. Good luck on the maiden!
