Wow, the Taz 6 is much louder than my mini 2. The stepper motors look like they are the same on both printers, so, why so much louder? Any good suggestions for quieting it down? Otherwise, I’ll have to move it to my basement so we can sleep at night.
I believe the biggest difference is the stepper motor drivers on the controller board. Unfortunately, you would have to get into the custom firmware business if you changed the controller board on the TAZ 6.
Adding a damper to the Y axis stepper is an easy mod. Running klipper instead of stock firmware also helps quite a bit. But to @b-morgan’s point, the drivers are apples and oranges. The mini2 is utilizing more modern TMC stepper drivers that enable both higher stepping frequencies and much finer realtime control over how each stepper is moved. Without a board upgrade there’s no way to fully close the noise disparity between these printers.
In order to install a motor damper on the TAZ 6 you’ll need some additional clearance between the motor and the surface the printer is on. This post contains a modified Y Motor Mount which raises up the motor: Taz 6 Vibration Damper Compatible Y motor Mount
Then you’ll just need to get the appropriate size screws.
