One of our Labs bought a Bambu Labs machine and it was damaged rather quickly. The team there stated it wasn’t very fun to repair or fix. Granted, they are interesting machines that are eating up the price point that Prusa’s have lived in for quite some time. Their XL is an utter disaster and I don’t know why anyone would pay those prices for their latest offering of the bed slinger.
CoreXY is neat and I know the Voron people were all the rage for a few years until the Bambu Machines could offer those speeds/times without being a complex build. We put together a Voron at the lab and it was a very involved process.
I think the goal to keep in mind is you want a machine that’s vastly plug and play. Quality slicer with pre-configured material profiles and then sent to the machine to print. Rinse and Repeat. Most lab managers I work along side with are multi-tasked like crazy. We really dont enjoy machines that cause headaches or reliability issues. I support several projects at work and always have a pretty hefty queue. The Ultimaker machines have been very good, despite some limitations - only abrasive nozzle they have is 0.6 , nothing bigger than 0.8 and their heaters are a bit on the low side. But - for 99% of the prints I get, they perfrom well. If I need parts and documentation on how to do such repair, they have it all documented.
Anyways, a tadoff topic but I wanted to give a little scope to what those of us that manage 3D printer labs in research deal with. Hobby users always have tight budgets and want everything as cheap as possible, which is usually a sacrifice in quality (i.e. every Creality, Elegoo, AnyCubic, etc…).
