Hey yall,
First Lulzbot printer of my own, got a Taz 6 for 100 bucks. The board that was inside the printer already was busted. Sounds like what happened is the heatsink had slipped and shorted out the Z-Axis driver, though maybe not. I don’t know, this is my firsy Lulzbot, but the guy included a sealed Rambo 1.4 board so I can’t complain too much. After swapping that in, everything appears to work minus some weirdness with one of the hotends but its likely a loose thermister wire, but im extremely frustrated with having to level the machine. I want to add a BL-Touch, but it doesnt seem like anyone has made a mount for the Taz Dual extruder V3. Someone may have, but my slouthing has not prevailed. If anyone does know of one, please I’d love to know. Along with the changes for a dual extruder with BL-Touch in the firmware and such.
Thanks!
Drunken Octopus (Drunken Octopus Firmware Tool) claims to have a firmware for dual v3 w/BLTouch.
It’s extremely niche, so you may get better support on the drunken octopus forums, it’s been brought up at least once before - Taz6 dual v3 bltouch - General - Drunken Octopus
Otherwise, I’d just say model a spot on the toolhead on your own, and roll up some custom marlin firmware.
Thanks for the reply.
Checked out Drunken Octopus, giving that all a shot. Did a pretty crummy model that attaches the BL touch to the hot end fan. Saw someone else used that design on a different extruder. Doesn’t really work on the V3 with stock screws but it holds it on enough. Gonna connect it and see how it works. Hopefully nothing bad will happen! (Foreshadowing because im not very good at wiring lol)
One alternative is to swap out from Marlin to Klipper for the firmware. It’s a bit of a heavy lift, but it’s much easier to mod after that. I’ve done that to two of my TAZ 6’s. An Archim2 board will also give you some additional options. If you want to stick with Marlin, the Drunken Octopus firmware should get you there.
As far as adding a BL-Touch physically to the machine, I would recommend trying to model it on the toolhead directly. If you swap between toolheads, you will find that they can be very different in Z height. I had that problem with one of mine in that I can’t swap toolheads without shimming the BL-Touch to account for the difference. If you only use one toolhead, it’s not as much of an issue to have it mounted directly on the mounting bracket. That’s where I have mine for the dual extruder. It took a few tries to get it the right height.
